An Inspiring Day at the Houses of Parliament

27th November 24

Emma S (2nd Form), recently enjoyed an unforgettable visit to the Houses of Parliament, where she found herself in the heart of British politics and gained unique insights into how the country is governed.
The day began with a tour of Parliament, where Emma was warmly welcomed by Sir Lindsay Hoyle, The Speaker of the House of Commons, in his private office overlooking the Thames. Despite his busy schedule, The Speaker graciously spent time with Emma, sharing stories since 1377. Emma was also guided through one or two areas of Parliament rarely seen by the public. A highlight of the visit was a photo opportunity in his official drawing room and receiving a personally signed copy of his new book, a truly special keepsake.
Emma watched the procession of The Speaker, preceded by the Sergeant at Arms carrying the mace, walking from his office toward the Commons Chamber, prior to having the privilege of attending Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) from The Speaker’s Private Gallery, where the excitement of parliamentary debate was heightened by the presence of notable figures such as Deputy PM Angela Rayner (who stood in for the PM), Wes Streeting, Shabana Mahmood, Rachel Reeves and Sir Chris Bryant.
During the visit, Emma also met Terry Jermy, her local MP, who generously dedicated over an hour to explain the inner workings of Parliament and discuss his role as an MP.
Emma’s day was filled with incredible encounters, as she spotted political figures including Dame Priti Patel, Jeremy Hunt, David Davis, Mel Stride Stephen Flynn (SNP), and even former MEP Nigel Farage (Reform) in the Commons Chamber.
Reflecting on her visit, Emma expressed how overwhelmed and inspired she was by the kindness and generosity of everyone she met at Parliament, in particular The Speaker’s Diary Manager, who helped make this occasion happen for her. This memorable experience not only deepened her understanding of politics but also sparked her excitement about the role of Parliament in shaping the nation’s future.
We are so proud of Emma for embracing this incredible opportunity and hope it will inspire her and others to continue exploring and engaging with the world of politics and governance.
