U18 Boys 1st X1 qualify for East Regional Finals at UEA Sports Park

14th February 19

Congratulations to the Wisbech Grammar School U18 Boys 1st X1 Hockey Team for winning their Regional Round 2 Tournament at Bedford on Thursday 7th February. This means that they now compete at the finals to become East Regional Champions on 7 March 2019

They played in a Round Robin Tournament at Bedford Hockey Club after qualifying from the Cambs Rounds in January. The first game was against Coopers Coborn from Essex; the team started with high intensity and within a few minutes Matthew Goodley, scored their first goal. From this point on WGS dominated the game and went into half time 4 – 0 up, with Matthew Goodley scoring his hat trick and Joshua Porter, also adding his name to the score sheet. Samuel Phillips, and Matthew Goodley scored two further goals in the second half taking the total to a 6 – 0 win for WGS.

Their second game was against a well organised Stamford Team. WGS kept up the same dominance with Samuel Phillips scoring first and Matthew Goodley scoring from a well-executed PC routine. Final score 2 – 0 Win for WGS.

The third game was a much closer affair with the Royal Hospital School and the team came in with a 2- 1 win to WGS

The fourth and final game was against Haileybury who were a strong competitor as they had also won all their previous games. WGS had to be organised to break down the attacking play that Haileybury applied, it wasn’t long though before we took the lead from a great strike by Samuel Phillips.
James Kerry, who hadn’t had much action all day finally got his opportunity to make an impressive stick save to keep WGS ahead. Samuel Landles, completed the scoreline with another well-struck PC.  Final score 2 – 0 Win to WGS.

The Boys will now play in the East Regional Finals on Thursday 7th March at UEA Sports Park, Norwich.
