A solid performance from the WGS boys’ 1st XI hockey squad with a 4-2 win
After producing a good performance against Pelicans HC last week, the boys’ 1st XI were keen to get back on the pitch for the visit of an Uppingham Senior squad
On Saturday 27 January, in blustery and rainy conditions, both teams looked to exert their authority on the opposition, from which it was WGS who took the upper hand with a well-taken goal from Frazer Brown inside the first 7 minutes. The opposition continued to probe down the wings, though credit to the WGS defensive unit they were unable to get a clear shot on goal throughout the half. WGS scored a further two goals through Louis Jones and a second for Frazer to leave the score at 3-0 in favour of Wisbech.
With the rain abating in the second half, both sides were looking to up their game, Uppingham were looking to close the gap, with the WGS side working to put the finishing touches to those opportunities created. It was the opposition who struck first in the second half, squeezing the ball inside the post off a penalty corner. WGS restored their 3 goal advantage with a goal from Jake Slender some 5 minutes later, which seemed to settle the nerves. Uppingham scored a second goal in the latter stages of the game, which was to prove to be the final action.
A solid performance from the WGS squad, one that should stand them in good stead for the next match, away at Norwich.
