Sport

Sport

Sport is an intrinsic part of School life at Wisbech Grammar School. From an early age we hope that pupils will engage in sport and fitness and discover the benefits that this brings to both health and well-being. We offer team sports against local and regional schools from under 9 to under 18 and we encourage pupils to take part in our program. We also participate in National and Regional competitions in Rugby, Netball, Hockey, Cricket and Athletics. Alongside this we also run clubs in Gymnastics, Badminton, Table-Tennis, Squash and Fitness, enabling pupils to develop sport and fitness for life.

With over 37 acres, we have wonderful facilities with 12 Rugby pitches ranging from under 9 to under 18, 5 grass cricket squares, 2 astro-turf pitches, a flood lit hockey pitch , 400 metres athletics track, alongside throwing and jumping areas. We also have a fully equipped sports hall with 5 cricket net bays, netball court, indoor hockey pitch, and badminton and basketball courts. To support pupils in improving their fitness we have a fitness suite and a studio where we hold fitness classes.

We have developed professional partnerships with Northampton Saints and Northampton CCC, which has allowed us to work alongside professional teams to give our pupils player pathways into Cricket and Rugby programmes .

We have highly qualified and experienced coaches leading sport throughout the School, several of whom coach to a high level outside of School. These are supported by a Physiotherapist and a Strength and Conditioning Coach to enable pupils to develop throughout the School.

Rugby

Rugby Union is the major boys sport in the Michaelmas Term, whilst it is also offered to boys and girls in the 7 a-side form during the Lent Term. Alongside a competitive block fixture card there are also a number of day trips and over-night tours which further develop the pupils as individuals and as teams.

The Rugby programme runs from U8s through to 1st XV with boys 7 a-side teams at U11, U13, U14, U15, U16 and 1st VII, and girls at U15, and U18. There is a structured development programme in place, supported by experienced rugby staff alongside physiotherapy and strength and conditioning provision. Our players are further supported by our partnership with Northampton Saints. Head of Rugby Alex Laybourne said “We are delighted to be working with Saints and the relationship gives players a clear player pathway to Elite level Rugby”.

We have had a number of notable successes in recent years which include Ali Price (2012) who has represented Scotland at full international level and plays for Glasgow Warriors. We also have pupils who have been selected for the Scottish Exiles (U16s and U18s), the LAMBS (U16s and U18s), Eastern Counties (15s, U17s, U18s) and in both Leicester Tigers and Northampton Saints Academy and Developing Player Programme’s.

Hockey

Hockey continues to flourish under the direction of Mrs Glover who is a GB Advanced Coach, who also coaches at the Regional Performance Centres. She is assisted by National League player Neil Evans, alongside coaches who have vast experience of playing and coaching. Hockey is the major sport for girls in the Michaelmas term and boys in the Lent term. The senior boys and girls both play indoor hockey throughout the Michaelmas term and compete in the County and Regional Indoor Championships.

The Hockey program runs from U8 through to 1st XI with 7 a-side teams at U8, U11 and U13, moving to 11 aside from U14, to 1st XI. There is a structured development programme in place, supported by experienced hockey coaches, alongside physiotherapy and strength and conditioning provision. A robust fixture list in both terms provides pupils to the opportunity to pitch their skills against local and regional opposition. There are also day trips and overnight tours which enable pupils to further develop as individuals and as a team.

Cricket

Cricket at Wisbech Grammar School is thriving and the school encourages all pupils to play in House and School matches. During formative years we concentrate on giving all young cricketers the opportunity to build a sound technique. Specialist coaches led by our Head of Cricket Neil Taylor and assisted by ex-County Cricketer Steve Goldsmith and Cambridgeshire Director of Coaching James Williams are at hand to help pupils develop these skills as they progress and give them further insights into the game.

A robust fixture list against local and regional schools, gives cricketers ample opportunities to put into practice all the new skills they have learned. We regularly field 20 boys and girls cricket team during the Trinity term. Pupils also have the opportunity to go on day trips and overnight tours, which enable them to play in different environments.

We have established a partnership with Northamptonshire County Cricket Club, which provides talented cricketers with a pathway to a professional County Club. We currently have pupils training with Northampton, as well as pupils playing County Age group cricket for Cambridgeshire and Norfolk.

Netball

Netball is well established at WGS and is the major sport for girls in the Lent term. Alongside a competitive block fixture card there are day trips and over-night tours which further develop the pupils as individuals and as teams and experience sport in a different culture.

Last year we were pleased to host Nat Panagarry, captain of Loughborough Lightning and England player to open two new all-weather Netball courts at the heart of school.

Pupils are able to develop their skills, understanding and tactical knowledge through training sessions, House and Inter School matches, both local and regional. During the Lent term we regularly put out 16 Netball School teams which gives the girls ample opportunity to represent the School. We also participate in the County U19 Netball Tournament allowing our senior girls the chance to prepare in the Michaelmas term. We have an excellent team of specialist and support coaches whom have vast experience in playing and coaching the game, led by Head of Netball, Mrs Sam Goodier.

Athletics

Wisbech Grammar School teaches athletics to all pupils from Kindergarten to Sixth form. Pupils are coached to improve their techniques, speed and endurance in track and field events.

Athletics plays a big part in the sporting life in the Trinity term and pupils compete in Inter-School, County, Regional and National Championships. In recent years we have had several pupils represent Cambridgeshire and Norfolk, as well as winning District, County, Regional and National Championships

A highlight of each school year is always the Sports Days! We hold 3; Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior, which give those pupils who wish to, an opportunity to compete for their House.

Swimming

We teach swimming to pupils from Kindergarten to Prep 6, using the swimming pool next to the school which offers a 25 metre, 5 lane main pool and a small pool for learners.

Our swimming program includes; Levels from Introductory (which is designed for Kindergarten) to Level 10 which is for the advanced pupils in Prep 6 along with Distance Swimming, Speed Awards and Personal Survival Awards. When pupils complete these awards they receive a certificate.

We are ambitious to provide the best provision for our swimmers so that they may achieve the highest standards possible and many of our pupils swim competitively outside of school.

We also partnered with Rookies Netball Club in Wisbech, which offers our pupils and children from the wider community the opportunity to play in teams throughout the year.

We are working to increase our partnership programmes across other sports during the coming year.
