Working in Partnership
Wisbech Grammar School has recently commenced a sports outreach initiative; our sports coaches visiting local primary schools and delivering one-hour sports coaching sessions, sharing their expertise and passion for sport. The School is keen to form closer relationships with the local community to inspire the next generation of young athletes!
To launch the new partnership, WGS welcomed Northants coach Phil Rowe and opening bat Robert Newton.
Head of Cricket Neil Taylor said “There is no doubt cricket in this area is very strong but I wanted to give our young cricketers the best opportunity by creating a distinct player pathway to the first class game. This is a really exciting time to be a young cricketer at Wisbech Grammar School, with the opportunities created by this partnership.
Northants Coach Phil Rowe said Northants County Cricket Club was delighted to be joining forces with Wisbech Grammar School and they are very keen to promote their club in and around the Wisbech area.
During their visit, Phil and Robert attended a coaching session in the indoor cricket centre, within the School sports hall and offered expert advice and guidance to pupils.
Phil said how impressed he was with the School facilities and the fact that the School is able to host nine games of cricket at home. After completing the coaching sessions, both Phil and Robert agreed that Wisbech Grammar School has many young talented cricketers and they were looking forward to working with us within the new Partnership Agreement.
The day was a fantastic opportunity for our boys and girls to showcase their skills and receive top coaching expertise from a professional cricketer.
Phil Webb, Director of Sport, said, “The School is very passionate and proactive about Sport and we have invested heavily in our facilities. Last year we ran 20 boys and girls cricket teams with the boys’ 1st X1 team remaining unbeaten for the season. We also have a good number of pupils representing Cambridgeshire and Norfolk”.
