International Boarding

Boarding at Wisbech Grammar School is centred round providing a ‘home from home’ experience for each and every pupil. Hazel House, the first boarding facility in the School’s 600 year history, is ideally located on the campus, two minutes’ walk from the Refectory (where all meals are served) and close to the heart of the School and our thriving community.

Boarding Pupils are fully integrated into life at WGS and upon leaving the House each morning, they follow the same routine as our 580 Day Pupils. Boarders, like Day Pupils, at WGS have the opportunity to take part in our Period 5 co-curricular programme, three days per week, as well as in after-school clubs. The choice year on year is growing and currently there are more than 40 clubs and societies on offer. These clubs are run by staff or senior pupils, for the benefit of all pupils at the School, so they can really begin to explore or indulge the passions they have outside of the classroom.

The Boarding facility itself consists of a living room, a dining room with access to a private garden, a kitchen where snacks and light meals can be prepared or cooked and a tutor’s study room. On the ground floor there is one junior boys’ bedroom, which accommodates three pupils, with en-suite bathroom facilities. Upstairs there is a mix of junior and senior rooms (three per room or two per room, all with en-suites) and separate bathroom facilities. The top floor provides accommodation for the Houseparent, who is responsible for the day to day running of Hazel House and the welfare of the pupils who board there.

Weekends at WGS are just as busy as Monday to Friday and there are many opportunities to play sport for the School, take part in recreational activities such as table tennis, basketball and badminton and to have some down time or go into town.

Saturday evenings tend to be ‘student-choice’ nights where boarders decide which take-away they would like to try and Sundays are a little slower in pace, incorporating regular trips to Cambridge, Peterborough and the beautiful Norfolk coast just 45 minutes away by car. Boarders are welcome to stay at Hazel House during the half-term breaks.

We offer a range of academic and recreational courses that are designed to support the cultural and academic progress of Boarders during their time at WGS. It is very much a ‘home from home’ environment and one which offers the very  best of UK Day School education, ensuring that Boarders have the ideal foundation to continue their onward educational journey at a top UK university
